All right, I'm sick of the bullshit with Christmas and public places and schools. You should be able to say merry Christmas. Watch the video it pretty much sums up my opinion. It may be animation but its the truth.
They thought it was too popish (Catholic) and too ritualized; they thought the holiday was very far removed from core Chistian beliefs due to all that spirit and celebration. Puritans were actually quite dour and looked down on celebrations of any kind.

Just a quick history lesson. It was the Puritans, yes the same stock as America's Pilgrims, who actually 1st succeded in banning Christmas:
